Blacksmith Tongs Guide: Your First Three Pairs

Flat, V-bit, wolf-jaw, box-jaw: what each jaw actually holds, how to refit tongs hot in one heat, and the three pairs that cover 90 percent of beginner forge work.

Ask a room of smiths which tool beginners cheap out on first, and it won't be the anvil. New smiths will agonize for weeks over choosing an anvil, then grab thousand-degree steel with a pair of channel-lock pliers and wonder why the work keeps squirming. Tongs are not an accessory. They're the half of your body that reaches into the fire, and the wrong pair taxes every single heat. Here's why bad tongs ruin work and bruise knuckles, what the four jaw types actually do, and which three pairs cover 90 percent of what a beginner forges.

A pair of tongs that fits your stock touches it along the full length of the jaw. A pair that doesn't touches at two points — and two-point contact is a hinge. Every hammer blow makes the bar pivot around that hinge, so half your swing's energy goes into wobble instead of moving metal. You compensate the only way you can: grip pressure. Your forearm pumps out in ten minutes, your control gets worse as your hand fatigues, and now you're death-gripping a lever while swinging two pounds of steel at it.

That's where the knuckles come in. When the bar rotates mid-blow, the hammer glances, the work kicks sideways, and your tong hand gets dragged across the anvil edge. When the grip finally fails outright, a length of orange steel goes somewhere — and hot steel has a documented talent for finding the top of your boot. Loose tongs also cost you heats: every re-gripping fumble is seconds of working temperature gone, so you take more trips to the fire to do less forging.

Good tongs disappear. The bar feels like an extension of your arm, your grip stays light, and your attention goes to the hammer, where it belongs.

The Four Jaw Types That Matter

Tong patterns number in the dozens, but four jaw styles do almost all the work in a beginner shop.

Flat-jaw (flat-bit) tongs. Two flat, parallel faces. They excel at flat bar and plate held on the wide face, which makes them a natural for stock you're spreading or for gripping finished sections. Their weakness: on square or round bar they make exactly the two-point contact you're trying to avoid, so don't ask them to hold a spinning 3/8-inch rod.

V-bit tongs. Each jaw carries a V-groove down its length, so square bar seats on its corners and round bar seats in the groove. One well-fitted pair holds both square and round within its size range, which makes V-bits the workhorse for bar-stock forging — hooks, pokers, punches, most of your first year.

Wolf-jaw tongs. Scalloped jaws with several notches of different sizes, gripping both along and across the bar. They're the jack-of-all-trades: they'll hold a range of squares, rounds, and flats acceptably, and irregular work — a hook with a finished scroll, a partly forged leaf — better than anything else on this list. The trade-off is that they hold nothing quite as securely as a dedicated pattern at its exact size.

Box-jaw tongs. One jaw carries side walls that wrap around flat stock like a channel, boxing it in so it can't twist or slide sideways. For flat bar — including the knife-width stock you'll eventually use for your first blade — box jaws are the most secure grip there is. They're specialists: the box fits one thickness range and little else.

Matching Tongs to Stock

The test takes two seconds. Grip the actual bar you plan to forge. The jaws should contact along their full length, and the reins should sit roughly a hand's width apart — two to four inches — where your hand naturally closes. Reins nearly touching means the tongs are too big for the stock; reins splayed wide open means too small, and your hand is doing an awkward gorilla grip either way.

Size matters in the other dimension too. Reins in the 16 to 20-inch range keep your hand out of the heat without turning the tongs into a heavy, tiring lever. And weight is real: a one-pound pair you can hold all afternoon beats a three-pound pair that fights you. For small stock, light tongs; save the heavy pairs for heavy bar.

Adjusting the Fit Hot

Here's the part beginners don't know: tongs are meant to be tuned, and factory tongs almost always need it. The fix takes one heat. Bring the jaws and the boss (the hinge area) to orange in the fire, clamp the cold stock you actually want to hold in the jaws, and squeeze the reins to where your hand wants them. Tap the hot jaws down over the stock with light hammer blows until they seat along their full length, and true up the reins so they're parallel. Cool the tongs and test the grip — the bar shouldn't rotate when you twist it deliberately.

Do this once per pair per stock size and your "okay" tongs become custom-fitted. During work, remember tongs get hot too: dip the jaws in the slack tub now and then. Hot jaws burn your grip time, and hot reins will eventually find your palm.

The Three Pairs That Cover 90 Percent of Beginner Work

You do not need a wall of tongs. You need three pairs matched to the stock you actually buy:

  1. 1/4 to 3/8-inch V-bit tongs. These live in your hand. Nearly every early project — S-hooks, drive hooks, leaves, punches — happens in this stock range, square and round alike.
  2. 1/2-inch V-bit or wolf-jaw tongs. For pokers, bottle openers, and heavier bar. If you choose wolf-jaw here, you also gain the odd-shape utility pair for work that's partly forged and no longer a neat bar.
  3. Box-jaw tongs for 1/4-inch flat stock. The moment you touch flat bar — openers, brackets, and eventually blades — the box jaw pays for itself in security alone.

Buying them as a matched set is usually cheaper than piecemeal; a set of blacksmith tongs covering those sizes gets you forging instead of shopping. When to Forge Your Own

Tong-making is a rite of passage, and a genuinely great intermediate project: it teaches drawing, shouldering, punching a rivet hole, and riveting a working joint — all skills you want anyway. But it's a poor first project, because making decent tongs requires... decent tongs, plus hammer control you don't have yet.

The practical path: buy your first three pairs, forge everything for six months, then make your fourth pair yourself — usually a specialist, like offset bolt tongs for a shape nothing commercial fits. By then you'll have the skills, and you'll understand fit well enough to build it in from the start. Down the road, specialized tongs matter even more for forge welding, where a fumbled grip means a missed weld and two wasted heats.

FAQ

Can I start with vise-grips or pliers instead of real tongs?

For your very first fire, locking pliers on flat stock will limp along. But the handles are short enough to put your hand uncomfortably close to the heat, the grip geometry is wrong for square and round bar, and there's no spring feedback, so the work still wobbles. Consider them a one-weekend bridge, not a plan — proper tongs are one of the cheapest meaningful upgrades in smithing.

What length should tong reins be?

For general bench work, 16 to 20 inches hits the sweet spot: enough standoff from the fire, light enough that your grip lasts. Longer reins make sense for big fires and heavy stock, but on 1/4-inch bar they just add leverage against you. If your hand is cooking at the forge, the problem is usually fire management, not rein length.

Why do my tongs keep loosening at the rivet?

Heat and use work rivets loose — it's normal maintenance, not a defect. Bring the boss to a heat, set the tongs over the anvil, and give the rivet a few firm blows on each side while opening and closing the reins so it tightens without seizing. A rivet that's too loose wobbles; one that's too tight won't let the tongs spring. Adjust until they swing freely but without slop.

Do tongs need to be special steel?

No — plain mild steel is the traditional and correct choice. Tongs need toughness and easy adjustability, not hardness, and mild steel takes repeated heating, bending, and re-fitting without cracking. That's also what makes hot-fitting possible. Save the alloy steel for punches and chisels, where hardness earns its keep.
